** As Featured in the Sydney Morning Herald - 10th September 2011 **
All of our courses come with 12 months access to our Rubbing Pixels Website valued at $99.
Welcome to my workshop / course section of the site. Four years ago I stepped in the field of teaching people the art of landscape photography since then I have had the pleasure of teaching over 500 students.
My courses cater for the real beginner to the advanced / professional photographer. You will be taught my full image capture workflow, setting up compositions and the thinking behind making an image work along with discussion on printing your work, colour management and much more, nothing is left out and no topic is off limits.
Taking photos like mine is a reality, you just got to know how. I offer a range of different courses from fixed date group workshops to private one on one tuition. I can even do totally customised private group, one or two day courses, to cater to your needs or location.
On this page you will find a lot of information about my courses, what they offer, required skill level (none), what you will learn on your day and more. So please use the top tabs to have a read. If you have any additional questions please don't hesitate to email or call me direct.
On the 10th of September my courses featured in the Sydney Morning Herald's section called the Traveller. To have a read of the article please click here.

I offer both group and private courses. My group courses are perfect for the total beginner wanting to learn exactly what their camera can do. We will get you off shooting on those preset modes and get you shooting using Manual. Giving you total control of how your image is exposed. The group courses just aren't for beginners though, they are for people looking to refine their skills to a high level. I find covering the basics in the group courses will start beginners of perfectly and for the more skilled shooters it will fill in the missing pieces and give you a better understanding of the how and why of what you have been doing.
My private courses teach the exact same content as my group courses but it is one on one teaching so we can start right at the very basics or at a level that you are at. These courses are popular for people of all skills levels from total beginners to advanced / semi professional photographers looking to refine their skills in a number of fields such as film, digital panoramic's, surf and aerial photography. Anything really.

The easiest way to say what you will learn on my course is to basically direct you to my main gallery and say, "If you like what you see then that is exactly what I will teach you."
Don't think for one minute you cant take images like mine, as you can, no matter what skill level you are. It all comes down to having a solid capture work flow and understanding of what your camera can do and that is what all my courses will teach you.
We look at detail into reading and understanding your histogram to the level where you wont even need to look at your photo image to know if it is right your histogram will tell you. I will give you the confidence to capture any kind of landscape you want. There will be no more "Hoping you get the shot" or "I fluked it" you will be able to shoot anything you want to a high level of capture and understanding.
We will look at and refine your ability to compose an image and see how it can work using a variety of capture methods and techniques like focal length and depth of field, how to pre visualise a shot before taking it so you can achieve the look and result you want by controlling things like shutter speed for water movement or stitching panoramic's.
People ask me at the end of the day if I do advanced courses and the simple answer is I don't. They have already been taught it. My work flow and how you want to apply it is your advanced shooting technique. For beginners it works great to get them sharp, highlight controlled images, for more advanced photographers they can use it to fully control and manipulate light and shutter speed to create any look they want to an image while maximising highlight and shadow detail. It is all in how you want to apply it.
Quite often students will find the amount they learn on my courses overwhelming as the realisation and ability to take and control how an image is created is now a reality. One lady even hugged me at the end of the day to thank me and then cancelled her subscription to Australian Photography magazine saying they never explained things to her like I did.

There are a lot of people doing courses these days, I'm not going to comment on what they don't do or wont teach as "I haven't done their course", I'll just point out a few important aspects of why my courses are different.
Firstly my courses teach you the exact same methods and techniques I use in my everyday work to achieve the results I get and that are displayed in my main gallery. I don't hold anything back. I shoot both film and digital at a professional level. My capture workflow and techniques have been refined to a fine art over a decade of shooting and this refinement produces excellent results.
I am a full time professional photographer which means that it is my full time job and sole income. So I am out constantly shooting and refining my own skills and technique which I then pass on when I teach. Because photography is my profession, my work has to be of a high standard to sell, I'm not interested in making images that look good online, they have to look good printed big. So it means you are taught skills to shoot, to print big, now you can decorate your own home with your work and not mine.
I also shoot surf photography with special underwater housings and also aerial photography from helicopters. These are topics I can discuss with you on the day or we can even customise a private course for you to focus on these specialised areas.
My courses are accompanied by a 50 page work booklet that is sent prior to the day starting and also will be your point of reference at the end of the day to refresh your memory. It also contains lists of suppliers that I use everyday to buy my own equipment, print and frame my work and more. I am the only photographer in the world who teaches and offers students a web site that is dedicated to taking their work to a whole new level through the use of on screen and in the field video tutorials. Access to this web site (Rubbing Pixels) is inclusive of your course cost and it allows you to continue your journey of self education after our course to a whole new level.
I teach a large number of students every year both on group courses and privately of all skill levels. I have taught over 500 so far my skills, this experience has allowed me to refine my different teaching methods and approaches for people who have different learning speeds and methods. I wont rush you through the content just so it has been taught, I will gauge your understand through the day, test you on it practically to make sure you have sound knowledge of the process. I will encourage you to ask questions and make the most from the day of what you want to learn and know in addition to the courses goals and objectives.
Finally I am an Accredited Member of the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) which means I have been certified as a full time professional photographer and my work has been deemed a professional standard in capture and quality and my business carries the appropriate insurances to conduct the services it offers.
Rubbing Pixels is a video tutorial web site that shows users how to process their digital images correctly using platforms like Photoshop, Lightroom and Photoshop Elements. The site is one of a kind for Australia and access to this site is standard for anyone who books on my courses.

I receive a great deal of feedback from my courses from those that undertake them and it isn't always in a written email. It is a sturdy hand shake and a sincere smile and thanks. I have even had a few hugs. But you have to take my word on all that.
I think you cant get more of a recommendation than your courses being presented in a written article in the Sydney Morning Herald. To have a read please click here.
